The Clinical Skills Evaluation Collaboration (CSEC) Seeks a Standardized Patient Trainer/Quality Assurance Specialist in the Houston, Texas center.

CSEC, a collaboration of the NBME and ECFMG which administers the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination for physician licensure, is seeking a talented, team-oriented individual to join the full-time professional staff as a Standardized Patient Trainer/Quality Assurance Specialist. 

The SP Trainer/QA Specialist will assist in recruiting and screening Standardized Patients (SPs) who are trained to portray patients in the high stakes clinical skills exam.  The successful candidate will train SPs, monitor performance, serve as specialist for assigned cases and provide colleagues across sites with portrayal information and interpretation and development of case-related materials. The successful candidate will possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills as well as extensive training experience.

The Clinical Skills Evaluation Collaboration (CSEC), a world expert in assessing clinical skills, is an outstanding resource for members of the world's academic health professions community. CSEC tests all aspects of the clinical encounter, including communication and interpersonal skills, patient examination, spoken English proficiency, and clinical reasoning. The responsibilities and duties of this position include:

  • To train SPs in all aspects of case portrayal (delivering details, physical simulation, affect, and realism), effective use of internal software programs and compliance with documentation standards, recognition of USMLE Step 2 CS criteria for physical exam maneuvers through trainer simulation of these maneuvers, case materials and medical matters including issues of bodily functions, sexual matters, psychological issues, etc.
  • Communication skills rating of USMLE Step 2 CS examinees, CSEC, ECFMG and USMLE policies and procedures, observes videos of SPs across sites for quality assurance purposes and recommends intervention, re-training or removal of an SP as needed to maintain standardization.
  • Gives on-going feedback to SPs, remediates SP performance based on feedback from central staff, case specialists, and personal observation, writes and communicates assessments of training interactions to Center Manager, Director of Center Operations, and appropriate CSEC staff, accumulates data for annual evaluations of SPs under the guidance of the Center Management, functions as Trainer on Duty, coordinates with exam operations staff while functioning as Trainer on Duty, gains knowledge of all aspects of CSEC Center issues.
  • Candidate recruits SPs, assists Center Manager in screening and matching SPs to cases, participates in meetings and seminars at the Central office or other CSEC sites as well as appropriate conferences as a means of professional development.
  • Candidate must be comfortable performing physical examinations of an SP's entire body for training purposes, with the exception of rectal, pelvic, genital, female breast and corneal reflex examinations.
  • Must also be comfortable with these maneuvers being performed on them as needed.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the CSEC Exam schedule and carry out other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The ideal candidate might have a combination of the following experience:

  • Teaching, direct responsibility for training others in a professional environment, standardized patient work, writing/editing, clerical /administrative, including computer use in an office environment, simulation/acting, clinical interviewing and physical examinations.
  • A Bachelor's Degree is preferred or at least 2 years equivalent in relevant work experience.
